In a personal message posted on social media on Saturday, the Prince and Princess of Wales announced that they would be celebrating Burns Night over the weekend.
The royal couple posted the following message to commemorate the memorable event, which falls on the birthday of renowned Scottish poet Robert Burns: “Celebrating the beauty of Scotland, the power of nature, and the poetry of Robert Burns, Happy Burns Night.” With their initials “W & C” and a Scottish flag emoji, the pair concluded their message.
A brief video was included with the message, and we are aware that the royals shared the post to emphasize how much Scotland is special to them.
Since their first encounter at St Andrews University in 2001, Scotland has held special meaning for William and Catherine.
The father of three, however, still has some unpleasant memories of the location because he was present at the picturesque Balmoral Castle when the news of his mother, the late Princess Diana, passing, was announced.
During a royal tour of the nation, he previously revealed, “I was in Balmoral when I was told that my mother had died. That very morning, while still in shock, I found solace in the service at Crathie Kirk.”
“And I found peace and comfort in the Scottish outdoors during the gloomy days of grief that followed. I will therefore always have a strong bond with Scotland.”
He went on to say: “I have a very happy memory alongside this painful one because I met Catherine here in Scotland 20 years ago this year. It goes without saying that you have a very special place in your heart for the town where you meet your future wife.”
King Charles also posted a unique photo from inside Balmoral for the occasion, so the Prince and Princess aren’t the only royals celebrating the moment.
Wearing a traditional Scottish kilt made from King Charles III tartan, the monarch posed in the rarely visited library.
“Wishing those celebrating a very happy #BurnsNight tonight,” he said. “The King in the Library at Balmoral Castle, taken by Millie Pilkington.”
